AMD Launches Ryzen Threadripper 1900X And Enables X399 NVMe RAID

If you have had your eyes on AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper processors, but felt that the 1920X ($799) and 1950X ($999) were out of reach, a cheaper alternative is now available for purchase. First announced late last month, the Ryzen Threadripper 1900X brings 8 cores and 16 threads to the table compared to 12/24 and 16/32 (cores/threads) for its 1920X and 1950X siblings, respectively.

The lower core count also means that the 1900X has a lower price tag, coming in at just $549. Since the 1900X works with the same AMD X399-based HEDT motherboards, you’re always free to upgrade to one of the more potent options later down the road (when prices inevitably fall).

The 1900X is the fastest 8-core Ryzen processor released to date, with a base clock of 3.8GHz and a boost clock of 4.0GHz. The processor’s Extended Frequency Range (XFR) goes up to a 4.2GHz. And unlike Ryzen 7, the 1900X can support quad-channel DDR4 memory on with 8 cores (up to 8 DIMMs supported). While it’s only $50 more expensive than the “lesser” Ryzen 7 1800X, it offers some potentially big performance gains compared to that processor.

However, the official global launch of the Ryzen Threadripper 1900X isn’t the only thing that AMD is announcing today. The company revealed today that its X399 chipset will soon receive a drive that update that will enable NVMe RAID. This driver will be available on or around September 25th at no additional charge to users. For those of you looking to hook up multiple SSDs and want an additional speed boost or extra data redundancy, this is a nice added perk.

If the Ryzen Threadripper 1900X is on your radar, you can buy it today from your favorite online retailers, including Amazon.
