AMD Unveils Ryzen Threadripper’s Massive And Amazingly Flashy Retail Packaging

AMD Ryzen Threadripper is so close, we can almost taste it. While gaming enthusiasts are no doubt excited to see early benchmarks of the HEDT processor (and get their hands on them), AMD itself is also getting hyped for the launch. That’s why AMD CEO Lisa Su took to Twitter this morning to give us a preview of the retail packaging for the new processors.

Just look at that — it’s massive. AMD is definitely going for the shock and awe factor, as this packaging is quite unlike anything we’ve ever seen in the past. We can’t tell if this is some sort of foam or plastic outer black housing, but what is clear is that the front of the packaging is dominated by a jewel-like plastic “window” emblazoned with the Ryzen Threadripper logo.

To get an idea of just how ginormous the retail packaging is, Su posed with the box, which you can see in the image below:

Given the sheer size, we have to wonder if the previous rumors of Ryzen Threadripper shipping with a free all-in-one liquid cooling solution are true. Given that the TDP for the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X could approach or even surpass 165W, a water cooler would be an awesome pairing with these processors. And given that AMD is already undercutting comparable Intel Core X processors by as much as $700, this could make the Ryzen Threadripper family even more attractive.

For those that need a refresher, here are the two confirmed members of the Ryzen Threadripper family:

  • Ryzen Threadripper 1920X: 12 Cores, 24 Threads, 3.5/4.0 GHz (Base Clock/Precision Boost)
  • Ryzen Threadripper 1950X: 16 Cores, 32 Threads, 3.4/4.0 GHz (Base Clock/Precision Boost)

The Ryzen Threadripper 1920X will be priced at $799, while the top-of-the-line 1950X will cost just $999.
