Bethesda recently announced that they would be re-releasing versions of Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 in honor of the franchise's 25th anniversary. Users would need to create BethesdaNet and login into their accounts before accessing the games. This requirement garnered criticism from gamers who believed that it was an unnecessary hurdle. The original Doom game did not demand Internet access when it was initially released over two decades ago. Many insist that it should not require an Internet connection now.
Bethesda has since suspended the login requirement. They explained in a recent tweet that the prerequisite was originally intended to help players unlock items for the upcoming game Doom Eternal. They contended that the “login should be optional” and that they would update everyone once the change had been made.
There have been a number of other complaints as well. Although all three titles are now available on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, backward compatibility for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 have been removed. Existing owners can still access their PS3 or Xbox 360 games, but new consumers will not have that luxury. It also appears that certain graphic changes have been made to the Doom and that the music tempo is slower on the Nintendo Switch.
Update on our new classic DOOM releases:
The BethesdaNet login requirement was included for the Slayers Club, to reward members for playing the classic DOOM games.
The login should be optional, and we are working on changing the requirement to optional now.
All three Doom games are currently available for the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, while Doom and Doom II are also available on Android and iOS devices. Doom and Doom II cost $4.99 USD and Doom 3 rings in at $9.99. Doom 3 only supports single-player, but it does include the Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Missions expansion packs.
At the moment it is unclear whether gamers who choose to login into the BethesdaNet will still be able to unlock items for Doom Eternal. It is also unclear how these interesting items would affect the overall gameplay. Let’s hope that Bethesda has an update soon.
