Google Assistant Installed Base Is Reportedly 10x Larger Than Amazon Alexa

We’ll see your 100 million assistant devices and raise you 1 billion. Google announced that it expects to sell one billion Google Assistant devices by the end of the month. The company's boast is in response to Amazon’s announcement that they had sold 100 million Alexa devices.

Amazon SVP of devices and services, Dave Limp, recently remarked that 100 million Alexa devices have been sold since Alexa’s release in 2014. This number includes both Amazon devices and other products that ship with built-in Alexa. Not to be outdone by Amazon, Google reported that they have sold 10X the number of Google Assistant devices since 2016. That estimate includes both Google products and devices from other brands including smartphones, smart speakers, smart displays, car infotainment screens, and home security cameras. It noted as well that Google Assistant devices are now available in over 80 countries in 30 different languages.

All of these numbers naturally need to be taken with a grain of salt. While we may now know the number of devices sold with Alexa or Google Assistant, we do not know the number of active users. For example, Google Assistant is built in to almost every Android device produced outside of China. However, it is unclear how many people use this feature on their smartphone.

It is also probable that Amazon has sold more smart home devices than Google. There are currently 28,000 smart home devices that include Alexa, but only 10,000 products that work with Google Assistant. Amazon’s record-breaking holiday season likely increased this disparity.

Devices controlled by digital assistants are likely to make a big splash this week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both Samsung and LG’s 2019 line of smart televisions will be compatible with both Amazon Alex and Google Assistant.

Some voice assistant products are a little more unexpected. Simplehuman latest smart mirror the Sensor Mirror Hi-Fi Assist, includes Google Assistant. The mirrors are intended to “enhance your morning routine — from makeup application to listening to your favorite music.” U by Moen just introduced a shower that is compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri through the Apple HomeKit. Users will be able to control the length and temperature of their showers. Regardless of the veracity of the reported numbers, Alexa and Google Assistant appear to be integrating into more aspects of our lives.
