MSI Unwraps P65 Creator Core i7 Coffee Lake Notebook With GeForce GTX 1070 MaxQ GPU

MSI is going after content creators and business professionals with the new P65 Creator notebook. While MSI is a name synonymous with PC gaming hardware, that doesn’t mean that the company can’t walk and chew gum at the same time.

At its heart is an 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor (Coffee Lake-H) that supports up to 32GB of DDR4-2666 memory (via two slots). The notebook features a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS display with thin bezels, "near" 100% sRGB and 72% NTSC coverage. That display is backed up by one of three GPU options. The White Limited Edition comes with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 MaxQ GPU, while the Silver Edition uses a GeForce GTX 1060 MaxQ GPU or a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

You'll find internal space for two SSDs. There's one M.2 combo slot that supports NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 or SATA SSDs and another M.2 slot that supports only PCIe SSDs. On the expansion front, the P65 doesn't disappoint. The White Limited Edition has a single Thunderbolt 3 port, three USB 3.1 ports, HDMI, SDXC reader and GbE. The Silver Edition swaps the Thunderbolt 3 port for USB-C.

As for the design of the P65, it eschews the flash and RGB lighting of its gaming-oriented siblings in favor of a more subdued look in the aforementioned white and silver colors. The machine features an aluminum chassis, which weighs 4.14 pounds and measures 0.69 inches thick. Onboard you'll find an integrated 4-cell 82WHr that can provide up to 9 hours of runtime. For comparison, the 3.76-pound ThinkPad X1 Extreme that was announced yesterday has a 15.6-inch 4K display, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti MaxQ GPU, Core i9 processor and can last up to 15 hours per charge.

Other features of note include a Windows Hello fingerprint reader mounted within the touchpad, and support for Microsoft's Cortana digital assistant.

“With the P65, we’re investing deeply in professionals and content creators, bringing them high performance for all of their everyday tasks," Sam Chern, MSI Assistant Vice President of Global Marketing. "We have taken the lessons we’ve learned from our years of experience in making gaming hardware and used it to create a beautiful, professional notebook that is more powerful than any laptop in its class.”

MSI hasn't released pricing or availability for the P65 family, but word on the street is that that they will debut in October.
