Project Fi Is Now Google Fi Supporting iPhones And Most Newer Android Devices

Project Fi Group

After its big surprise was spoiled yesterday by a website leak, Google has announced that Project Fi is indeed making a big expansion. In fact, its name is also changing: the MVNO service will now be known as Google Fi.

As we reported yesterday, Google Fi will now support a larger group of Android smartphones along with most newer iPhones. Google says that Google Fi will support "popular Android phones" including devices from Samsung, Motorola and OnePlus. iPhone support is currently listed as being in beta (you can grab the Google Fi iOS app here).

When it comes to Android support, you should know that most Android smartphones will work as long as they are running Android 7.0 and have access to LTE bands 2 and 4. If you're bringing an iPhone to Google Fi, you'll need to be running at least iOS 11.

While Google Fi is expanding its hardware support, that doesn't mean that all features will be available to devices like the Samsung Galaxy S9 or the iPhone XS Max. Instead, Google says that only the smartphone available from the Google Fi website are compatible with the "full Google Fi experience". This includes smartphones like the Pixel 3/Pixel 3 XL, Motorola Moto G6 and LG G7 ThinQ.

Limited Google Fi support for iPhones as detailed by Google

The expanded list of newly supported Android devices and iPhones won't have access to the seamless switching between Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellular wireless networks or to Google Fi's new enhanced network feature (essential a fast, secure VPN). However, you do get all of the other benefits from Google Fi like group plans, high-speed international data coverage, no contracts, and Bill Protection.

Google is also upping the ante with new subscribers to Google Fi with the following offer:

Today only, whether you’re new to Fi or already one of our subscribers, when you buy a phone from Google Fi, you can vacation on us, too. For any phone you purchase, you’ll receive the same value back in your choice of travel gift cards, which you can spend on flights with Delta and Southwest or lodging with Airbnb and hotels.com. Alternatively, if you’d rather set up Google Fi on your current phone, you’ll earn $200 of Fi service credit when you sign up today.

You can check to see if your current smartphone is compatible with Google Fi here and sign-up for service here.
