Samsung Galaxy Fold June Launch Now In Doubt Following Epic Display Fail: Report
This entry was posted on May 28, 2019.
It looks as though a planned June re-launch date for the Samsung Galaxy Fold won't happen after all. The intriguing Galaxy Fold flagship was supposed to launch in late April, but that release was foiled by an epic fail with regards to the smartphone's display and hinge mechanism in the hands of reviewers.
It was expected that Samsung would attempt to launch the Galaxy Fold again in June, but we're hearing today that the device will not be released next month. This news comes from the South Korean publication, Yohap News Agency, which says that Samsung still needs more time to ensure the workability of the design changes it has made to the Galaxy Fold's hinge and protective display cover (which could be easily removed causing irreparable damage).
A Samsung representative speaking with the publication stated, "The release schedule has not been decided, and we are in a position to announce the launch schedule in a few weeks."
For customers that originally pre-ordered the Galaxy Fold direct from Samsung, you have until May 31st to re-confirm your order with Samsung or it will be automatically cancelled. Best Buy has taken an even more abrupt step by cancelling all Galaxy Fold pre-orders that were placed via its online store.
"With breakthrough designs and technology come many hurdles and the possibility to face a plethora of unforeseen hiccups. These hurdles have led Samsung to postpone the release of the Galaxy Fold, and Samsung has not provided a new release date," wrote a Best Buy representative last week. "Because we put our customers first and want to ensure they are taken care of in the best possible manner, Best Buy has decided to cancel all current pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Fold."
For those that need a refresher, the Galaxy Fold features a 7.3-inch primary display along with a 4.6-inch cover display than you can interact with when the smartphone is folded closed. Powering the device is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor paired with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. The smartphone has two batteries -- one in each "wing" -- with a total capacity of 4380 mAh.
The Galaxy Fold carries an outrageously expensive price tag of $1,980 for those that are willing to be guinea pigs for a first-generation device.
