Unlocked Razer Phone 2 Users Can Now Grab Android 9 Pie Update

Android users typically wait in anticipation for their device to get the update to the latest flavor of Android; often times, that waiting can extend for months. Android 9.0 Pie was officially announced last August, first landing for the Google Pixel devices. Razer has now finally announced that the Android 9 Pie update is rolling out for the Razer Phone 2 that was announced in October.

The update is rolling out first to users of the unlocked smartphone model. Razer expects the update to hit carrier models in mid-March. As for what users can expect from the update, it brings 4K video recording at 60 fps, gesture navigation, and more. A list of the main new features can be seen below.

With so much crammed into the update, it's a large file at a bit over 1.4GB. The Razer Phone 2 is currently on sale via Razer for $649.99, which is $150 off the regular price and Razer throws in a free cell phone stand with the purchase. The device uses a Snapdragon 845 SoC, vapor chamber cooling, and has 8GB of RAM. Dual rear cameras include a 12MP f1.75 wide lens with optical image stabilization and a 12MP f2.6 telephoto lens.

Power is via a 4,000 mAh battery, and the smartphone supports wireless charging. The smartphone is ruggedized with an IP67 rating to survive splashes and rain. Audio is one of the phone's strong points with dual front speakers with Dolby Atmos and a 24-bit USB-C DAC. The screen is a 5.72-inch IGZO LCD at 1440 x 2560 native resolution with 120Hz and wide color gamut.
