  • Did you buy a used Nest Indoor Cam to save a few bucks over purchasing one that is brand new? Normally that would not be a problem, provided you perform a factory reset when setting it up. However, a bug was discovered that could allow the previous owner to tap into the camera's feed, even after the new owner performed a full wipe. Fortunately, Google scrambled to issue a patch to fix the problem. Even though the issue is now fixed, this was a pretty big blunder on Google's part. So, what happened? One of the members of the Wink Users Group on Facebook found that after he sold his Nest camera, he was still able to access images from it, through his Wink account. This was not by means of malicious intent, but something he stumbled upon.
  • We have no qualms recommending the OnePlus 7 Pro as it currently exists—it combines a killer display with a 90Hz refresh rate, with high-end hardware and excellent camera performance, all at a price point that is easier to swallow than some competing flagship Android phones.  As good as the phone already is, however, an upcoming firmware update is going to add some nifty new features. The feature we are most excited about is video recording support getting added to the ultra-wide camera. This could be a game changer for some folks, and has been a widely requested upgrade. For OnePlus 7 Pro owners who have been pining for ultra-wide video recording, the OnePlus team confirmed that the feature has been approved and is under development.
  • Houston, we have a security issue (you thought we were going to say "problem," didn't you?). Actually, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has several security issues, according to an audit by the Office of Inspector General. Among other things, an examination of JPL's network security controls found that the division was the target of a cyberattack in April 2018, in which hackers exploited a Raspberry Pi computer to gain access to the network. Simply put, "the device should not have been permitted on the JPL network without the JPL Office of the Chief Information Officer's (OCIO) review and approval," the report states. Nevertheless, hackers leveraged a vulnerable Raspberry Pi to swipe 500 megabytes of data from one of the network's major mission systems, and ultimately dive deeper into the network.
